SCENE: The Man, having just rejected the girl in the previous cell, stands at the beginning of a small room filled with flickering street lamps. Notably, the lamp closest to his position is turned off. The subtle silhouette of a small creature is just barely visible.
Man
(What an impudent person...)
Man
(It's one thing to do one's job, but another to tell such a bold-faced lie. What reason would she have to pull aside a stranger other than soliciting for a sale?)
Man
(And what was that ridiculous costume?)
Man
(...Back to the task at hand. There ought to be a telephone booth somewhere along this road.)
Man
(It's just a matter of time until -- eh?)
After a few exaggerated flickers, the lamp closest to the Man suddenly turns on. The silhouetted creature is now in full view, eliciting a surprised ("!") reaction from the monologuing protagonist.

What...is that?

(...It's hard to make out its features in the dark, but I'm fairly certain it's just some hideous cat. No cause for alarm...)
With slower steps to make clear his unacknowledged trepidation, the Man begins to walk around the "cat".
