The creature lunges at the Man. The player is able to deflect it with a swift "A" press, where the Man uses his own briefcase as a shield, however it is (intentionally) unlikely that a player will know this without advance knowledge.

PHASE 1 START
At this point, the player gains access to the Frencounter battle system UI. All options other than ATTACK are greyed out and unselectable, however. The player is therefore forced to ATTACK.
The Man makes an unrehearsed attempt to batter the creature with his briefcase, to which `he` does not even react. A tiny "0" appears from its sprite to indicate to the player that no DMG was received.

Like the previous attack, the creature lunges at the Man, which can be deflected with a well-timed press of the A button. However, unlike the previous attack, the word "DEFLECT!" will appear on-screen.
PHASE 2 START
Man
(I...need to get away from this thing, and fast.)

(I guess it's time to FLEE.)
Man
(...The less I think about the fact that I'm running away from a cat as a grown man, the better.)
The FLEE option becomes selectable from the battle system UI, and the ATTACK option is no longer available. The player is therefore forced to FLEE. Upon doing so, the Encounter ends.
